It was February 11, 1858, when Bernadette, together with her sister, Toinette, and Jeanne Abadie, a friend, went to the prairie of Lourdes to look for wood for the fireplace.
At a certain moment they found themselves in front of the grotto of Massabielle (which means old rock), where a journey of faith and hope began for Bernadette.
As Bernadette was about to take off her stockings… her gaze is drawn to the grotto, where she herself will tell us that she has seen a light, a smile and finally a young lady dressed in white. Bernadette does not believe; she is afraid, and starts praying the Rosary.
The “Lady in white” also has a rosary in her hands and prays with her. At the end of the prayer, Bernadette takes the wood and goes home with the other girls.
Afterwards, the visionary will feel called to go to the grotto again.
At the third apparition, the Lady asked the young girl to go there 15 more times. It was the first time Our Lady spoke.
Bernadette came to see the Virgin 18 times. She called her Aquero – meaning “that thing” – because she did not know her name.
The news of the apparitions spread immediately to Lourdes and to the neighbouring villages, then all over France and finally, all over the world.
When and how did the Oblates arrive in Lourdes?
One account relates that the Bishop of Lourdes during the time of Bernadette, wrote a letter to Saint Eugene to ask for Oblates to serve at the Sanctuary. This letter unfortunately arrived in Aix during the days when our founder was about to die, so it was never answered.
We have no definitive proof to be able to confirm this account about this letter, which is narrated -sometimes as part of legend or tradition. Perhaps, it was never actually written.
Only in the 80’s, Fr. Andre Cabes, one of the priests of the Shrine, with the agreement of Bishop Monsignor Donze, wrote a letter addressed to the Superior General, Fr. Ferdinand Jette, asking for the establishment of an Oblate community at the service of youth ministry, which was opened in March 1985. And so the Oblates arrived in Lourdes!
Over the years, the Oblates have given their service not only in youth ministry, but also in other ministries, but manly, to one in particular, that is, the pastoral care of pilgrims in five languages: Italian, English, German, Spanish and Dutch.
Today, there are five Oblates in Lourdes who come five different nations. They are at the service of Mary, the Shrine, and the thousands and thousands of pilgrims who go to the Grotto every day to present their prayers to Our Lady.

GLI OBLATI A LOURDES
Era l’11 febbraio del 1858, quando Bernardetta insieme alla sorella Toinette e Jeanne Abadie una amica, vanno nella prateria di Lourdes, per cercare legna per il camino.
Ad un certo momento si ritrovano davanti alla grotta di Massabielle (= vecchia roccia), dove inizia per Bernardette un cammino di fede e di speranza.
Bernardette non crede, ha paura e inizia a pregare il Rosario.
Anche la Bianca Signora ha tra le mani una corona del Rosario e prega con lei. Terminata la preghiera, Bernardette prende la legna e torna a casa con le altre ragazze.
Successivamente la veggente si sentira’ chiamata a recarsi ancora alla grotta.
Alla terza apparizione, la Bianca Signora chiedera’ alla giovane ragazza di recarsi li per altre 15 volte. Era la prima volta che la Madonna le parlava.
Bernardette per 18 volte vedra’ questa Bianca Signora, che lei chiamera’ Aquero -che significa “Quella cosa la”- perche’ non conosceva il nome.
La notizia delle apparizioni si diffuse subito a Lourdes e nei paesi vicini, poi in tutta la Francia e infine in tutto il mondo.
Questa evento ha portato a Lourdes tante persone da varie parti del mondo, con la necessita’ di avere al santuario un maggior numero di sacerdoti diversi per lingua per poter rispondere al bisogno dei pellegrini…
Quando e come gli Oblati sono arrivati a Lourdes?
Qualcuno racconta che il Vescovo di Lourdes ai tempi di Bernardette, abbia scritto una lettera a sant’Eugenio per chiedere oblati a servizio del santuario. Questa lettera purtroppo arrivo’ ad Aix nei giorni in cui il nostro fondatore stava per morire, per cui lo scritto non ebbe mai una risposta.
Non abbiamo delle prove certe per poter affermare quanto a volte si racconta –forse per tradizione o per leggenda – di questa lettera che in realta’ non e’ stata mai scritta; ma siamo sicuri invece che il primo pellegrinaggio nazionale straniero con 300 pellegrini inglesi fu accompagnato da padre Ring un Oblato di Maria Immacolata. E ancora piu’ interessante padre Ferdinand Gondrand, oblato francese, fu invitato a Lourdes dal vescovo Mgr Laurence per predicare il ritiro dei preti nel 1860. In questa occasione egli chiese a Bernardette un resoconto scritto dell’apparizioni; il primo che la veggente scrisse.
Solo negli anni ’80, p. Andre’ Cabes, con l’accordo del vescovo Mgr Donze, scrisse una lettera indirizzata al superiore generale p. Ferdinand Jette, per chiedere la fondazione di una comunita’ oblata a servizio della pastorale giovanile, che fu aperta nel marzo del 1985. E cosi gli Oblati sono arrivati a Lourdes!
Negli anni gli oblati hanno prestato il loro servizio oltre alla pastorale giovanile, anche in altri ministeri del santuario, ma uno in particolare la pastorale dei pellegrini in cinque lingue: italiano, inglese, tedesco, spagnolo e olandese.
Oggi gli Oblati a Lourdes sono cinque e di cinque nazioni diverse, a servizio di Maria, del Santuario e di migliaia e migliaia di pellegrini che ogni giorno si recano alla grotta per presentare alla Madonna le loro preghiere.
